PROJECT REPORT
COVID-19 EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN INDIA
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: URGENT SHIPMENT OF RESPIRATORS TO AHALYA HOSPITAL IN GUNTUR, ANDHRA PRADESH – INDIA Indian Culture Centre Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation (Fons Català de Cooperació al Desenvolupament)
1. The Need for the Project
From 15 April 2021, India began to record a huge increase in new COVID-19 cases. The second wave caught India by surprise; the sudden rise in cases overwhelmed the country’s healthcare system, leaving hospitals without enough beds, oxygen or medicines. By early May 2021, the country was living through a real nightmare due to the virulence of this second wave, with more than 20 million infections and 4,000 deaths a day. Crematoriums could not keep up with cremating the bodies of those who died from the pandemic, and patients piled up at the entrances of hospitals waiting to be treated, dying before they could be attended to due to the lack of oxygen.
2. Project Implementation
The project was carried out at Ahalya Hospital in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh (India), which has capacity for 100 beds, in order to provide free care to all the people who needed help during this oxygen emergency caused by the second wave of COVID-19. This hospital has saved hundreds of lives with the help of this project, driven by Indian Culture Centre Barcelona and supported by the Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation.
3. Results Achieved
Thanks to this project, Ahalya Hospital has so far helped more than 800 people free of charge, using the oxygen concentrators provided by Indian Culture Centre and the Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation, and continues to help everyone who needs it today. All these oxygen concentrators were purchased in India by Ahalya Hospital with the donation from Indian Culture Centre and the support of the Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation.
- Total Donation: 93 oxygen concentrators
- Financial Investment: 93 x €750 = €69,750.00
- Total People Assisted: 856 people
4. Acknowledgements
Many thanks to all the municipalities and institutions that took part in this project with their contributions. We are very grateful for all the effort made by the Catalan Fund for Development Cooperation.
