Today in Spanish class, we celebrated the Corpus Christie festivity by holding a Rangoli Workshop with the students. The Corpus Christie festival is one of the three most important Catholic festivities of the year, along with Christmas and Easter. Flowers are the exceptional protagonists of the celebrations. The Corpus Christie procession and the festive entourage pass over long flower carpets that adorn the streets. Some of the most spectacular flower carpets, made by neighbors during the Corpus Christie festival, can be seen in Sitges. In Barcelona, the popular Corpus Christie procession is divided into two parts: the religious procession, organized by the Cathedral Chapter, and the festive procession, organized by the City Council. After the solemn mass, the two processions come together and parade through various streets of the Gothic Quarter. The festive program also includes sardana dances and the traditional custom of “L’ou com balla” (The egg as it dances) which consists of placing an empty egg on the stream of water from various fountains located in cloisters, patios or gardens.
